Sport popular in the UK and USA, but in two
different forms. In the UK, the cars are `old
bangers', which attempt to force the other
cars off the track or to come to a
standstill. This format is popular in the USA
as `demolition derbies'. In the USA, the cars
are high-powered sports cars that race on
purpose-built tracks at distances up to 640
km/500 mi. In the US, the cars are
high-powered cars that race on
specially-built tracks, at distances of up to
640 km/500 mi. over 400-500 miles. In the USA
the sports is governed by the National
Association for Stock Car Auto Racing
(NASCAR) founded 1947.
